Eight model members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) were awarded the July 1 Medal, the Party's highest honor, for their unwavering commitment to professional excellence and a deep bond with the people.

On Wednesday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, honored model Party members for their outstanding contributions at a ceremony marking the Party's 105th anniversary in Beijing.

The eight model recipients are Ma Shanxiang, Uhas Sulayman, Wu Yaqin, Li Liancheng, Zhao Yafu, Chen Junwu, Wang Yuchang and Zhong Jue. Working in various sectors, their collective efforts have deeply contributed to the country's development.

Ma Shanxiang, of Hui ethnicity, was born in 1956 and joined the CPC in 1979. He is a retired official from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, and has worked on the frontline of public service at grassroots level. Having helped to resolve over 2,500 neighborhood disputes, he has developed grassroots governance methods to provide valuable experience for improving ideological and political work at the community level.

Uhas Sulayman, of Kazakh ethnicity, was born in 1955 and joined the CPC in 1993. He is a former associate chief physician at Yumin County Hospital for Animal Husbandry Workers in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. For decades, he traveled through mountains to provide medical care for herders. He also helped establish a volunteer healthcare service team in local area with more than 300 participants.

Wu Yaqin was born in 1960 in Changchun City, northeast China's Jilin Province. She joined the CPC in 1998 and currently serves as First Party Secretary of Changshan Huayuan Community in Changchun. For more than 30 years, Wu has dedicated herself to grassroots governance. She has pioneered innovative community governance mechanisms, founded a workshop and developed more than 10 training courses to train nearly 30,000 key personnel in grassroots governance.

Li Liancheng was born in 1951 and joined the CPC in 1986. He served as the Party branch secretary and director of the village committee of Xixinzhuang Village in Qingzu Township, Puyang City of central China's Henan Province. He pioneered a collective economic model under which households hold shares, residents participate in work, and families receive dividends. With his efforts, Xixinzhuang Village has transformed from an impoverished settlement into a nationally recognized model for rural revitalization and a National Civilized Village.

Zhao Yafu, born in 1941 in Changzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, joined the CPC in 1966. He is a researcher at the Daizhuang Organic Agriculture Specialized Cooperative in Tianwang Town of Jiangsu. For over six decades, Zhao has devoted himself to agricultural development in China's mountainous areas and remained on the front lines of rural revitalization. Combining scientific research with practical farming, he has devoted himself to improving agricultural productivity and enhancing farmers' income.

Chen Junwu was born in 1927 and passed away in 2024. He joined the CPC in 1956. Chen served as Advisor to the Science and Technology Committee of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), with a career spanning more than 70 years in petroleum and petrochemical industry. He served as chief designer of China's first fluid catalytic cracking unit, helping transform the country's refining industry from a relatively underdeveloped sector into one with world-class capabilities. He also authored a book that helped provide scientific support for the formulation of national carbon reduction policies and energy structure adjustment.

Wang Yuchang was born in 1936 and joined the CPC in 1964. He is a 90-year-old veteran from Xiaoxian County of east China's Anhui Province. At the age of 18, Wang enlisted in the military and devoted himself to studying missile technology. He improved missile fuel-loading and assembly procedures and applied the "short-range rapid engagement" combat method. After leaving the military, Wang remained devoted to the Party and continued to serve in civilian position as the deputy manager of the former Xiaoxian Department Store.

Zhong Jue was born in 1936 in Xian County in north China's Hebei Province and joined the CPC in 1986. She is a professor at the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Central South University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Zhong has overcome key technical challenges in the large-scale production of high-performance hot-rolled aluminum sheets, broken through a number of critical technological bottlenecks, and helped bring China's aluminum processing technology to the forefront of the global industry. She has also provided long-term support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, demonstrating both the dedication of a scientist and the compassion of an educator.

Global sea surface temperatures have surpassed the previous record highs for this time of year set in 2023 and 2024, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) said on Wednesday.

According to data from C3S, the global sea surface temperature reached 20.86 degrees Celsius on June 21, slightly above the 20.83 degrees Celsius recorded on the same date in 2023 and 2024. Data from CMEMS also showed record-high sea surface temperatures on the same day, reaching 21.0 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degrees Celsius higher than previous records in 2023 and 2024.

The two services said the new record was linked to the onset of El Nino conditions in the equatorial Pacific, as well as unusually high sea surface temperatures observed in several ocean regions in recent months.

C3S warned that warmer oceans can affect weather patterns, increase evaporation and raise the risk of extreme precipitation and flooding. Ocean warming also contributes to sea-level rise, ice melt, and more frequent and intense marine heatwaves, putting pressure on marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal economies.
