A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Thursday called on Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to abandon secessionist party platform and recognize the 1992 Consensus.
"The DPP obstinately clings to its secessionist stance, and its secessionist party platform stands as proof of its calculated pursuit of 'Taiwan independence' and its attempt to split Taiwan from China. Since taking office, the DPP authorities have actively sought support from external forces to pursue a secessionist agenda, seriously undermining cross-Strait relations, threatening peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and harming the safety and well-being of Taiwan residents. They have thus faced widespread opposition and rejection from Taiwan compatriots. 'Taiwan independence' is as incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Strait as fire with water. Seeking independence by relying on force will only plunge Taiwan into the abyss of disaster," Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a regular press conference in Beijing.
"The future of Taiwan, as well as the security, interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots, are always tied to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and national reunification. Only by abandoning its secessionist party platform, ceasing its separatist activities and acknowledging the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, can the DPP truly improve cross-Strait relations and ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We are willing to strengthen exchanges and communication with political parties, organizations and people from various sectors in Taiwan on the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing 'Taiwan independence', working together to seek peace across the Taiwan Strait, well-being of our compatriots and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," Zhu said.
