The SB has been promoting and explaining the importance of safeguarding national security to members of the public through various channels. At the launch ceremony, the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, said that this year marks the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). As President Xi Jinping remarked at the celebration of the 105th anniversary of the founding of the CPC on July 1, promoting the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao is an inherent requirement for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. He also mentioned the support for Hong Kong and Macao to better integrate into and serve the national development, fully demonstrating the care and support of the Central Government for Hong Kong. As Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the country, we must also resolutely safeguard national security. This is not only the constitutional duty of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region but also the obligation of every Hong Kong citizen.

Mr Tang said that following the launch of the on-campus interactive drama last year featuring the national security comics characters Andy and Security Bear, the production has been "upgraded" this year with the characters reaching out to the community. This drama performance continues to use examples in everyday life to explain key national security concepts, so that the general public, particularly young people, understand that each and everyone in the community can make contributions to safeguarding national security.

To highlight the concept of "security brings prosperity", this drama performance has introduced a new character to underscore the importance of a "home" that is safe and secure to everyone. The performance also incorporates important anti-scam messages to the community by featuring the appearance of The Little Grape, the anti-scam mascot of the Hong Kong Police Force. In addition, there are new musical and dance set-pieces as well as interactive sessions to enhance the viewing experiences of the audience, enabling them to appreciate the importance of safeguarding national security while enjoying the performance in a relaxed atmosphere.

In future, the SB will continue to adopt an innovative and diverse approach in promoting and deepening national security education. Efforts include facilitating national security education to take root in schools, teaching young people and young children key national security concepts from an early age through the stories of Andy and Security Bear etc. So far, over 13 500 primary school and kindergarten students have already participated in relevant activities. The SB will continue to adopt a multipronged strategy to proactively take forward national security education programmes and activities, with a view to spreading the concept of "security brings prosperity" in the community, such that the general public will consciously safeguard national security and the entire community will create a strong, combined force to safeguarding national security together.

Incoming passenger convicted and jailed for importing duty-not-paid cigarettes

An incoming Chinese male passenger was sentenced to five months' imprisonment with a fine of $1,000 by the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today (July 3) for importing duty-not-paid cigarettes and failing to declare them to Customs officers, in contravention of the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance (DCO).

Customs officers intercepted a 35-year-old incoming Chinese male passenger at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (July 2). About 28 400 duty-not-paid cigarettes were seized from his personal baggage. The estimated market value was about $142,000, and the duty potential was about $93,800. He was subsequently arrested and was sentenced to five months' imprisonment and fined $1,000 today.

Customs welcomes the sentence. The custodial sentence has imposed a considerable deterrent effect and reflects the seriousness of the offences.

Customs reminds members of the public that under the DCO, cigarettes are dutiable goods to which the DCO applies. Any person who imports, deals with, possesses, sells or buys illicit cigarettes commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

Members of the public may report any suspected illicit cigarette activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
