Typhoon Bavi has brought heavy rainfall to Dongzhi County, Chizhou City in east China's Anhui Province which started on Sunday, prompting local authorities to immediately activate emergency response and launch disaster relief operations.
The rainfall triggered secondary disasters including surging river levels and landslides, leaving roads flooded.
From 8:00 Sunday to 8:00 Monday, the county was hit by persistent heavy rainfall, with Yuankou Village in Huayuan Township recording 148.5 millimeters of cumulative precipitation.
The Siyuan'ao Reservoir, with a storage capacity of 3.8 million cubic meters, plays a critical role in flood control for five administrative villages along its route.
Affected by the heavy rain, the reservoir's water level rose rapidly. Local officials began round-the-clock monitoring and embankment patrols starting Saturday.
"We're the ones keeping watch here. Once the reservoir discharges, every village has to evacuate people in low-lying areas and the elderly living alone," said Jin Linshu, Party branch secretary of Nanxi Village of Huayuan Township.
At 20:00 Sunday, the water level at Siyuan'ao Reservoir exceeded 82.2 meters, surpassing the discharge threshold by 20 centimeters. Huayuan immediately initiated evacuations, relocating 64 people to hotels and other elevated locations.
"The village and township authorities have arranged everything. All we need to do is stay there and not worry about anything. Someone has been arranged to feed our pigs, ducks, geese and chickens at home," said Jin Lizhong, a villager from Taoyuan Village of Huayuan.
The heavy rainfall also caused the Geyuan River to overflow in Huidao Village, Dongzhi County's Gegong Town.
The village's only main road was severely flooded, cutting off access for over 1,000 residents from six village groups.
After the emergency occurred, local officials rushed to the scene, setting up warning signs and assigning personnel to guard and advise against water-related risks. They also urgently evacuated 17 people from nine households in high-risk areas.
By 6:00 Monday, the flooded main road in Gegong Town had been fully reopened.
To address landslides and rockfalls on mountain roads, local authorities urgently deployed heavy machinery for clearance and repairs. Currently, all blocked rural roads in the town have been open to traffic.
Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon of the year, made consecutive landfalls along the coast of east China's Zhejiang Province late Saturday before moving inland, bringing storms and floods to several eastern and northern provinces.
