The international community should place development at the center of the international agenda, and China supports United Nations (UN) reform moving in the right direction, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who is also the president-elect of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), in Manila, the Philippines.
Wang said Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid a successful official visit to China last month, during which the two sides' leaders jointly announced the building of a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era, providing new strategic guidance and drawing up a new blueprint for the development of bilateral relations.
As a trustworthy good neighbor and good friend of Bangladesh, China will, as always, support the Bangladeshi government in its governance efforts, Wang said, noting that China stands ready to work with Bangladesh to implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, enhance strategic communication, deepen political mutual trust, advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and promote the building of a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era to deliver more benefits to the two peoples.
Wang congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the UNGA, saying the world today is confronted with turbulence and that the United Nations faces serious challenges.
China will firmly uphold the status and role of the United Nations, Wang said, noting that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals is seriously lagging, and the international community should initiate planning for post-2030 development cooperation.
At the high-level meeting of the group of friends for global governance held in May this year, China put forward proposals on the direction of UN reform, Wang said, stressing that China stands ready to work with the president-elect to unleash the full potential of the United Nations.
For his part, Khalilur Rahman said China has always been a valued and trusted partner of Bangladesh and occupies an important place in Bangladesh's foreign policy. Bangladesh firmly adheres to the one-China principle and stands ready to work with China to advance cooperation such as the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, and jointly build a Bangladesh-China community with a shared future in the new era.
He said Bangladesh supports the four global initiatives proposed by China and is willing to strengthen coordination with China, give full play to the role of the United Nations, and safeguard multilateralism.
