Tariff war and trade war serve no one's interests, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.
Lin made the remarks in response to a media query regarding the U.S. Trump administration's new round of tariff measures, which came into effect at 12:01 Friday.
"China's stance on China-U.S. economic and trade issues is consistent and clear-cut. China opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures, as tariff war and trade war serve no one's interests," he said.
The new measures of imposing tariffs of 10 to 12.5 percent on imported goods from 60 economies started just as the temporary 10-percent worldwide tariffs expired.
The economies include Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom, according to the release.
A variable rate of 10 or 12.5 percent, net of the Most-Favored-Nation rate, applies to certain non-exempted products from economies including the European Union, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland. Meanwhile, a 12.5-percent duty is imposed on all other investigated economies.
