Rescue efforts continue after Indonesian ferry fire

Rescue efforts are underway in Indonesia after a ferry carrying 271 people caught fire in waters off the country's Madura island on Sunday, leaving at least five people dead and dozens missing.

Officials said rescuers and nearby vessels have saved hundreds from the burning ship, with search and rescue operations for the dozens still missing continuing.

Ahmad Basri, a volunteer involved in the rescue efforts, said that the rescue team has coordinated with several agencies, and was ready to receive any survivors or victims recovered.

"Earlier, we received information that the victims would be brought to Surabaya. So, we coordinated with several agencies. We are on standby. If victims are brought in by ships that find them at sea, we are ready to receive them," he said.

U.S. stocks ended higher on Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 693.38 points, or 1.32 percent, to 53,178.41. The Standard and Poor's 500 added 110.78 points, or 1.48 percent, to 7,600.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 540.04 points, or 2.13 percent, to 25,913.90.

Eight of the 11 primary Standard and Poor's 500 sectors ended in the green, with communication services and consumer discretionary leading the gainers by adding 4.3 percent and 2.68 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, energy and consumer staples led the laggards by going down 1.23 percent and 0.31 percent, respectively.
