Argentina will not take retaliatory diplomatic measures against Brazil after the Brazilian government decided to downgrade bilateral relations, Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno said Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Quirno argued that disputes are formed through the participation of both sides, adding that Argentina should not bear sole responsibility for the incident. He said Argentina would maintain its current level of diplomatic relations with Brazil and reiterated that Buenos Aires regretted Brazil's unilateral decision.
Brazil has downgraded relations with Argentina to the charge d'affaires level, Brazilian media said Tuesday, citing sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Besides, it also said it would not send its previously recalled ambassador back to Argentina.
The decision followed remarks made by Argentine President Javier Milei against Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and other Brazilian officials in recent weeks.
On July 25, at a political event in Brazil's southeastern city of Sao Paulo to support the presidential candidacy of Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Milei strongly criticized Lula and protested against Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Federal Supreme Court justice, for blocking him from visiting Jair Bolsonaro who has been imprisoned since November 2025.
A day later, Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina in protest.
