The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Thursday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.25 percent to 99.93 at 15:00 (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1524 U.S. dollars from 1.1553 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound dropped to 1.3457 dollars from 1.3469 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 158.33 Japanese yen, higher than 157.67 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar rose to 0.8122 Swiss francs from 0.8069 Swiss francs, and it climbed to 1.4014 Canadian dollars from 1.4008 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar rose to 9.5068 Swedish kronor from 9.4832 Swedish kronor.

International gold and silver prices closed lower on Thursday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for December delivery dropped 0.13 percent to settle at 4,299.60 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for September delivery slipped 1.09 percent to close at 61.606 dollars per ounce.
