Russian Ambassador to Japan Nikolay Nozdrev has issued a stern warning that any Japanese reversal of its Three Non-Nuclear Principles would breach international treaty obligations and invite countermeasures from regional countries.
Nozdrev said that Japan's reversal of its Three Non-Nuclear Principles would directly violate the international obligations it assumed under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear-weapon state, according to RIA Novosti on Sunday.
It would lead to a severe deterioration of the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and inevitably invite countermeasures from other countries in the region, the Russian ambassador said.
Nozdrev's warning comes as the Japanese government has repeatedly tested the boundaries of the nuclear weapons issue, seeking to revise the Three Non-Nuclear Principles or even acquire nuclear weapons since Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae assumed office in October 2025.
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has said on multiple occasions that Japan should discuss nuclear-related policies without taboo, including the future of the country's anti-nuclear stance.
