Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th of the year, made landfall at Yuhuan of Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, at around 17:30 on Sunday, said the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
The maximum sustained wind near the typhoon center hit Force 14, or 42 meters per second, making Dolphin a severe typhoon upon landfall.
The NMC warned local authorities in the affected areas to guard against extreme downpours.

According to high-definition camera footage, a bustling ferry terminal usually busy with passenger vessels was lashed by fierce winds and heavy rain amid severely reduced visibility.
The winds along the coast have been continuously strengthening, and are expected to reach up to Force 9 to 11.
A power plant in Taizhou City experienced winds of Force 13 around 11:00 on Sunday, and the cumulative precipitation in the past six hours exceeded 60 millimeters.
The plant has completed windproof reinforcements for large machinery and anchored temporary facilities ahead of schedule to brace for Typhoon Dolphin.
China's national observatory on Sunday activated a red alert -- the highest level in the country's typhoon warning system.
Typhoon Dolphin is forecast to make landfall along the country's east coast from Sanmen in Zhejiang Province to Fuding in Fujian Province around Sunday evening to the early hours of Monday, according to the National Meteorological Center.
