LAIKA, the award-winning stop-motion animation studio, is partnering with Rizzoli New York on a landmark publication, accompanying its sixth feature-length film, which will be released globally starting October 23, 2026. The highly anticipated Wildwood follows Prue, a precocious teen searching for her kidnapped brother. LAIKA adapted the Portland-based story from the 2011 novel of the same name, written by The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy with illustrations by Carson Ellis. The film has been in the works for over a decade and has been described by the film’s director and LAIKA President & CEO Travis Knight as “the hardest thing we’ve ever done” (Taylor et al. 169).
The Art of Wildwood chronicles the film’s 15-year journey celebrating the artistry, craftsmanship, and innovation behind every aspect of its creation. The book explores the making—from concept to fabrication—of the film’s unprecedented 136 locations, intricately designed puppets, alongside handmade costumes, character design, cinematographic choices, and story development. Through state-of-the-art scans of original materials, stunning photography, and firsthand testimony from LAIKA’s top creatives, all woven together by acclaimed film journalist Drew Taylor, readers will gain an exclusive look at the remarkable creative and technical achievements that brought Wildwood to life.

Drew Taylor is a senior writer at The Wrap and has contributed to The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Vulture, and Time Out New York. He has also authored several books on film. Colin Meloy is the lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists and is the author of the bestselling fantasy novel Wildwood (2011). Travis Knight is the President and CEO of LAIKA, which he founded in 2005, and is the director of numerous feature films, including Wildwood. LAIKA founded in 2005 in Oregon, has produced five films -- Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019), all of which been nominated for the Academy Award® for Outstanding Animated Feature. LAIKA was awarded a Scientific and Technology Oscar® in 2016 for its innovation in 3D printing.

Syndee Barwick is a veteran of the entertainment, publishing, and comics industries, as well as an ordained Interfaith Minister and the author of The Marvel Tarot Deck and Guidebook. She is a contributor to several editions of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul, has written for The Guardian, and serves as a contributor and reviewer for multiple metaphysical sites. Ruth Ann Sellars is the self-taught illustrator behind the brand Barnacles and Moss. Drawing on her love of horror, folklore, and storytelling, she creates intricately detailed illustrations that balance darkness and whimsy.
