The second World Humanoid Robot Games came to a close at the National Speed Skating Oval in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, after over 2,000 robots developed by more than 600 teams from 16 countries and regions battled it out in 51 competitive events. The five-day Games has already showcased the staggering potential of the robotics sector.
In the much-anticipated 100-meter sprint, China's Tien Kung Ultra humanoid robot clocked 9.39 seconds at the finish line, shattering the 9.58-second men's 100-meter world record set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt 17 years ago.
In addition to a series of sporting challenges from soccer to athletics, the Games also features 21 scenario-based contests covering various real-world settings from factories to logistics and the service sector.
The robots on display at the Games have also leveled up. Scenario-based events tested real-world skills such as housekeeping, emergency rescue, and industrial assembly to challenge robots in perception, decision-making, and independent operation.
"Our Games included a wide range of scenario-based contests that replicate real-life conditions. These competitions are also meant to pave the way for robots to be integrated into manufacturing and everyday settings in the future," said Ma Yunfei, director of the Smart Manufacturing and Equipment Industry Division of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.
