Rescuers are racing to clear a mass of debris from the final few hundred meters of a crucial cut-off road link leading to the border port of Gyirong in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, as they hope to grant access for more personnel, heavy machinery and specialist equipment to reach the core disaster zone.

The deadly mudslide, which was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier on the Nepalese side of the border with China, has left at least 16 people dead and 546 others missing in Gyirong, according to the Xizang regional government.

The disaster left sections of the G216 national highway -- a key road leading to the affected area -- completely cut off, sparking a major operation to restore access and clear a pathway through for rescuers to reach the site.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Emergency Management said it had deployed 158 personnel and 33 sets of equipment such as excavators and loaders from the state-owned China Anneng Construction Group to tackle the final section of the G216 national highway leading to the port that has been damaged by the mudslide.

As of noon Tuesday, the rescue team was down to the last 800-meter stretch as they near the port, with teams having already cut through more than a kilometer in their efforts so far.
