National recognition highlights Australian microalgae innovation bringing together agricultural productivity, sustainable food supply and climate solutions
MELBOURNE, Australia, Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Australian microalgae company Genesis has won the Agriculture & Environment category at The Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leaders 2026 Awards.
The award recognises Genesis' development of practical microalgae-based solutions designed to improve agricultural productivity while reducing environmental impact.
Making sustainability work for agriculture
Agriculture is under growing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, but new technologies will only achieve meaningful scale if they also make economic sense for farmers.
Genesis develops microalgae applications designed to bring productivity, affordability and emissions reduction together. At the centre of its work is Chlorella grown in Australia's Great Barrier Reef Region using a comparatively low-energy cultivation process.
By keeping the algae wet rather than drying it, Genesis has developed a livestock supplement targeting a cost of around 20 cents per animal per day, compared with approximately $2 for some dried alternatives.
Trials with Queensland cattle producers have reported faster growth and earlier achievement of production weight. Shortening the production cycle has the potential to reduce the period over which cattle generate methane while improving production efficiency and farm economics.
Genesis is also developing microalgae applications for crop productivity, carbon capture and utilisation, and agricultural methane reduction, working with research institutions and universities in Australia and internationally.
Genesis CEO Eric Chen said the award came at an important stage in the company's growth.
"We now have an opportunity to take this Australian technology into more products and markets, while strengthening our R&D capabilities and exploring how microalgae can help address pressing climate challenges," Chen said.
Genesis co-founder Colin McGregor said commercial value had always guided the company's agricultural work.
"Farmers shouldn't have to choose between reducing their environmental impact and running a profitable business," McGregor said.
"If a solution is affordable, improves animal performance and delivers a clear return, it has a much better chance of being adopted at the scale needed to make a real difference."

In the news release, Wooree Group Concludes Vitafoods Asia 2026, CEO Ji-yong Yoon Calls for Scientific Validation Standard for Liposome Claims, issued 07-Sep-2026 by Wooree Group over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that the product name "Harutin" should read "Haroutine" throughout the release, as originally issued inadvertently. Wooree Group Concludes Vitafoods Asia 2026, CEO Ji-yong Yoon Calls for Scientific Validation Standard for Liposome Claims
- CEO Ji-yong Yoon presents proprietary liposome validation framework: "Scientific validation should come before a product is labeled 'liposomal.'"
- As Korea's pioneer in commercializing liposomal health functional foods, Wooree Group aims to set new industry quality standards.
- Showcases an integrated bio value chain spanning raw ingredients, manufacturing, and consumer brands at Vitafoods Asia.
SEOUL, South Korea and BANGKOK, Thailand, Sept. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Wooree Group, a leader in biotechnology and lighting solutions with 60 years of expertise, successfully concluded its participation in Vitafoods Asia 2026, held September 2–4 in Bangkok, showcasing its proprietary liposome technology and integrated bio value chain.
Participating for the second consecutive year, Wooree Group presented its end-to-end bio ecosystem, uniting Wooree Green Science (ingredients), Wooree Bio (manufacturing), and consumer brands Haroutine and Clarion. The booth also received the Silver Award at the Sustainability Booth Design Awards, organized by Informa Markets, in recognition of its eco-friendly structure, reusable materials, and waste-reduction measures.
During a briefing session on scientific validation standards for the liposome market, Wooree Group CEO Ji-yong Yoon noted that despite rapid market growth, objective standards for evaluating product quality remain lacking.
"In the absence of clear industry standards, some products are marketed as 'liposomal' simply because particle size was measured or phospholipids are present," Yoon said. "To build genuine trust, a step-by-step validation process is needed from confirming actual liposome formation to demonstrating in-vivo delivery potential."
Yoon introduced Wooree Group's proposed validation framework, the "Six Pillars," comprising:
- Liposome structure verification using Cryo-TEM
- Particle size, distribution, and concentration analysis using NTA
- Encapsulation efficiency
- Long-term shelf stability
- Gastrointestinal stability
- Pharmacokinetic (PK) evaluation of bioavailability
"The liposome market should evolve toward a model where competitiveness is determined by how rigorously a product has been validated," Yoon added.
Based on this framework, Wooree Green Science has developed its proprietary liposomal ingredient brand, LIPOPRIME, which encompasses approximately 40 ingredients, including Vitamin C, glutathione, omega-3, and curcumin. NTA analysis demonstrated that select LIPOPRIME ingredients feature particle concentrations up to 24 times higher than competing market alternatives.
Wooree Group is also accelerating its global expansion, having introduced test products from its health functional food brand Haroutine on Amazon in the United States, while collaborating with a plant-cell biotechnology firm on next-generation functional ingredients. Moving forward, the Group plans to further expand strategic partnerships across Southeast Asia and the broader global nutraceutical market.
