Judge hitless in return but Yankees clinch 34th straight winning season with 5-3 win over Rockies

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge went hitless in his return from the injured list but Cam Schlittler struck out 10 in seven sharp innings as the New York Yankees beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Tuesday night to clinch their 34th straight winning season.

In his first appearance since May 31 after missing 84 games with a broken rib, Judge struck out swinging with a runner on in the first inning, flied out in the fourth and took a called third strike in the sixth.

He was replaced in right field in the seventh, as planned.

Facing the Rockies for the first time since Colorado traded him to New York in July 2025, Ryan McMahon hit a tiebreaking double against rookie Gabriel Hughes (0-7) off the bottom of the right-field wall in the fifth for the Yankees (82-62). New York’s streak of winning seasons is the second-longest in the four major sports behind the Yankees’ 39 in a row from 1926-64.

Heliot Ramos added a three-run homer in the eighth, one inning after entering for Judge.

Hunter Goodman hit his 37th homer, a two-run drive off Tim Hill with two outs in the ninth, before David Bednar struck out Mickey Moniak on three pitches for his 32nd save in 35 chances.

New York stayed four games behind first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East and moved three ahead of Boston for the top American League wild card.

Schlittler (13-6) allowed one run and three hits with no walks while reaching double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year.

The right-hander lowered his AL-best ERA to 2.01. He's permitted no more than one run in 20 starts this season, most in the majors and a Yankees record.

Adael Amador homered in the third for Colorado.

Cody Bellinger scored for the Yankees in the first when left fielder Jake McCarthy committed two errors on a single by Luis García Jr. McCarthy allowed the ball to bounce off his glove, then kicked it and was charged with a throwing error when the ball bounced past Goodman at the plate.

José Caballero entered at second base with one out in the ninth for Jazz Chisholm Jr., who jammed his right thumb on a headfirst slide in the eighth.

Colorado RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (12-8, 5.19 ERA) opposes New York RHP Will Warren (9-6, 4.16) on Wednesday night.

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norway will bid its final farewell to King Harald V on Wednesday with a funeral attended by royalty and leaders from across Europe and beyond, who will pay tribute to the popular monarch's 35-year reign.

Harald, who died on Aug. 28 aged 89, was Europe’s oldest monarch and had modernized the royal house, but refused to follow in the footsteps of other aging monarchs who have abdicated in recent times. His son immediately became King Haakon VIII and last week pledged an oath of allegiance to Norway's constitution in parliament.

On Wednesday, the coffin will be taken from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral in a procession, followed by Haakon, other senior Norwegian royals, foreign guests and representatives of Norway’s parliament and others.

Ahead of the funeral, Norwegians have waited patiently to file past Harald's coffin as it lay in state in the chapel of the royal palace in Oslo. The queue was seven hours long at one point over the weekend. Over 46,000 people visited the chapel during the week.

Large crowds are expected in the capital for the funeral. The downtown area will be closed to vehicles and electric scooters, and police have instructed people not to bring bicycles, umbrellas or sharp objects. Large screens have been set up for people to watch the ceremony.

Among the guests expected to attend are the monarchs of Sweden, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Jordan. The heir to the British throne, Prince William, is also expected, as is Crown Prince Akishino of Japan. Presidents from a range of European countries will join them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among those attending the funeral. On Tuesday, he met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo to discuss the war in Ukraine. The United States will be represented by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker.

A minute's silence will be held across Norway at the start of the funeral ceremony. Eulogies will be delivered by Norway's parliament speaker and prime minister, and there will be a candlelighting ceremony with representatives of different faiths.

After the funeral, Harald's coffin will be taken in a procession to the palace chapel at Akershus Castle, where the late king's ancestors are buried. After a private ceremony for the Norwegian royals, who will be joined by some of the foreign guests and senior Norwegian officials, it will be lowered into the crypt.

Norway’s monarchy traces its origins to King Harald Fairhair in the ninth century. When Norway regained its independence from Sweden in 1905, three-quarters of voters in a national plebiscite approved restoring the monarchy.

Today, the throne's role is largely symbolic and power lies with the elected government and parliament, but the Norwegian royal family retains a role in promoting the wealthy Scandinavian nation around the world.
