U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky might happen following his phone conversation with Putin.
Trump and Putin held a telephone conversation lasting an hour on ending the Ukraine conflict on Tuesday.
Trump told news media before boarding Air Force One to fly to Dallas for the Republican Midterm Convention that it was a great conversation and Putin is wanting to make a deal.
The conversation was held after senior U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Putin in Moscow last Saturday before traveling to meet Zelensky in Kiev on Sunday.
Both Russia and Ukraine had announced a three-day pause in hostilities around Kiev and Moscow before the ceasefire abruptly ended, with fighting resuming shortly afterwards.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russia is ready to return to Ukraine-Russia-U.S. trilateral talks, confirming that all parties share a common willingness and political commitment to resume negotiations. He also cautioned that it is unlikely an immediate roadmap to end the conflict can be formulated. Russia will continue maintaining contact with the U.S. and is also working on prisoners exchanges with Ukraine, he said.
