LONDON (AP) — Formula 1 has approved a 15-kilometer reduction in official race distances starting next season, cutting total distance from 305 to 290 kilometers.
The decision was finalized in London by the Formula 1 Commission, chaired by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis.
“In line with the refinements to the power unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps”, the FIA said in a statement.
The change aligns with the upcoming 2027 power unit regulations, which favor increased engine power over hybrid electrical output.
To better handle rain delays and red flags, the commission has also abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap. While the two-hour maximum of active racing time remains, the change gives organizers flexibility to complete full race distances. Practice sessions will also gain added flexibility to extend following stoppages.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Marcus Mariota will start at quarterback for the Washington Commanders this weekend after Jayden Daniels went down with a dislocated left elbow.
Coach Dan Quinn said Daniels had imaging done Monday and will see specialists Tuesday and Wednesday. Quinn said he might have an update on Daniels on Thursday or Friday.
The injury during Sunday's loss at Dallas came on a freak play at the end of the first half. Daniels took a snap under center, and left guard Chris Paul stepped on the quarterback's foot as he backed away from the line of scrimmage. Daniels used his non-throwing arm to brace his fall and perhaps keep the play going, but in doing so he injured the elbow.
A similar thing happened last November, when Daniels used his left arm to brace himself and dislocated his elbow during a game against Seattle. He returned from that injury just over a month later, only to aggravate the problem and miss the rest of the season.
Now Daniels' timeline for a return is unclear, but Mariota is set to start the home opener Sunday against Seattle.
