Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday the interests of both China and the United States are deeply intertwined and that there is plenty room for cooperation, as he urged the two sides to work together to help solve global issues.
In an address at a grand welcome ceremony hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, Xi said he was visiting the United States at President Trump's invitation to "carry on our friendship, expand cooperation, and promote the well-being of both our peoples."
Noting that the two sides have agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, Xi also called for more sincere cooperation, citing their responsibilities as major countries.
"The interests of China and the United States are deeply intertwined, and there is plenty of room for us to work together. China-U.S. cooperation may not solve every problem in the world. But, without our cooperation, it would be hard to solve many of the world's problems," he said.
Xi stressed said China welcomes American companies wanting to invest and do business there, and hopes Chinese companies will be treated fairly in the United States.
Working together, the two countries can lengthen the list of cooperation and shorten the list of issues, the Chinese president said.
He also called for greater cooperation in the development and management of artificial intelligence, law enforcement, and urged for an increase in direct flights between the two countries to facilitate two-way travel and trade.
At the invitation of Trump, Xi is on a state visit to the United States from Wednesday to Friday. It marks Xi's second state visit to the U.S. following his first visit in 2015 and comes after Xi hosted Trump in Beijing back in May.
