China's total box office revenue for the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday has surpassed 100 million yuan (about 14.9 million U.S. dollars) as of 19:06 Beijing Time on Friday, according to the film data platform Maoyan.
Running from Friday to Sunday, the festival has seen more than 20 domestic and international new releases hitting theaters across genres including mystery, comedy, romance and animation.
The films of "Avengers: Endgame Encore," "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East" and "All Wishes Come True" currently ranked among the top three titles for the period.
The "Avengers: Endgame Encore" is drawing renewed attention with a major re-release. The newly branded version adds four minutes of previously unseen footage compared with the original cut and is positioned as a lead-in to the "Avengers 5: Doomsday," scheduled to be on big screen on December 18.
The "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East" is set in a war-torn Middle Eastern city and follows a Chinese cook who travels abroad in search of a better life, weaving anti-war themes into a culinary story with a cross-cultural commentary.
The comedy animation "All Wishes Come True," inspired by the classic Chinese myth of the Eight Immortals, utilizes a traditional landscape painting style to depict the mystical realm of Penglai and has struck a chord with audiences by delivering a heartwarming message of mutual support and resilience.
In addition, among the new releases, "The Old Dog," starring Yu Qian and Tony Leung Ka-fai, follows an investigation sparked by a theft. The story pits a veteran detective against a financial tycoon in a high-stakes battle with a murder case, a massive debt and a short-selling scheme driving the plot.
Several films also join the Mid-Autumn Festival period, including "The Legend of A Tofu Maker," "Red Boy," "My heart will go on and on" and "Peppa Pig: Perfect Holiday," giving audiences a wider range of choices during the holiday season.
