A Chinese expert on Friday highlighted the significance of the enriched China-U.S. relationship positioning, saying a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity is vital for both countries and the world.
Chinese President Xi Jinping successfully concluded his three-day state visit to the United States on Friday. During the visit, Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to build a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
Prof. Diao Daming, vice dean of National Academy of Development and Strategy at Renmin University of China, provided insights on this enhanced positioning.
"From September 23 to 25, 2026, President Xi paid an extremely successful state visit to the United States at the invitation of President Trump. During this historic and milestone visit, the leaders of China and the United States further enriched the connotations of the new positioning of bilateral relations reached at their May summit, agreed to jointly build a 'constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity,'" Diao said.
He explained that the principles of respect, fairness, and reciprocity align with China's longstanding approach to managing relations with the United States, advancing both historical legacy and a constructive path forward.
"The connotations of this new positioning - respect, fairness and reciprocity - are in line with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation that China has consistently upheld in handling China-U.S. relations. They represent both an inheritance of past principles and a continuation of historical experience, and moreover a continuous development of the right way for the two countries to get along in the new era," the professor said.
"'Respect' is the prerequisite, meaning respecting each other's social systems, development paths, and core interests, while carrying forward the spirit of the three China-U.S. joint communiques. 'Fairness' represents the value pursuit, embedded in a new type of international relations advocated by China that emphasizes fairness and justice in both international relations and the upholding of international law and international order. 'Reciprocity' emphasizes mutual benefit and a balance of rights and obligations, underscoring equality of status and consideration of interests in international exchanges - one side cannot enjoy rights alone while the other bears obligations alone," he said.
Diao emphasized that these principles are essential for advancing the new positioning of bilateral relations, ultimately benefiting the peoples of both nations and the broader global community.
"The connotations of respect, fairness and reciprocity will help China and the United States continuously advance the new positioning of a constructive relationship of strategic stability, so that the China-U.S. constructive relationship of strategic stability will better benefit the peoples of both countries and the peoples around the world. A constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity injects new stability and certainty into China-U.S. relations: managing differences through respect, shaping order through fairness, and achieving mutual benefit through reciprocity. Upholding and continuously developing this constructive relationship of strategic stability is the way for China and the United States, two major countries, to seek the right way to get along, benefiting the peoples of both countries and providing a stabilizing anchor for a turbulent world," Diao said.
