The duty-free consumption market in south China's tropical island province of Hainan witnessed a new wave of shopping boom during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday from September 25 to 27.
According to the latest official data from the Haikou Customs, duty-free shopping totaled 231 million yuan (about 34 million U.S. dollars) in Hainan during the three days, with shoppers making 38,600 store visits and 179,000 purchases.
The main consumption force included families and people traveling with friends, among whom the popular goods included high-end skin care products and luxury bags.
China on December 18, 2025 launched island-wide special customs operations in the Hainan Free Trade Port, the world's largest FTP by area, allowing freer entry of overseas goods, expanded zero-tariff coverage and more business-friendly measures.
This marks a new stage in the development of the Hainan FTP, which enables freer flows of goods, capital, personnel and data, supported by zero tariffs, low tax rates and a simplified tax system.
After years of development, duty-free shopping has become a hallmark of Hainan's tourism industry.
