Stars sign goalie Casey DeSmith to 2-year, $5 million extension as backup to Jake Oettinger

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars signed backup goaltender Casey DeSmith to a two-year, $5 million contract extension that runs through the 2028-29 season.

The move announced Wednesday means the Stars could have the same 1-2 goalie combo led by Jake Oettinger for five consecutive seasons.

DeSmith has a 29-16-8 record with a .911 save percentage, 2.50 goals-against average and three shutouts over two seasons since signing with the Stars as a free agent.

The 35-year-old had a career-best point streak of 13 games with nine victories early in 2025-26. It was a franchise record before Oettinger surpassed it by one game later in the season.

DeSmith has been particularly strong on the road. Among goalies with at least 10 starts over the past two seasons, he is tied for second in goals-against average (2.34) and third in save percentage (.918).

“Extending Casey has been a priority for us, and we’re excited to have him locked up for two more years,” general manager Jim Nill said. “He’s been incredibly reliable during his time with our organization.”

DeSmith has a 99-69-29 record with a .910 save percentage and 2.74 goals-against average in 220 games over eight seasons. The New Hampshire native is fifth among active American-born goalies with 13 career shutouts.

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — A man shot three co-workers during an altercation Wednesday at a northern Virginia business, killing two of them, before he took his own life during a police standoff along an interstate highway, police said.

Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, opened fire at an equipment rental business in Manassas, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of Washington, D.C., Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen said at a news conference.

Keen identified the two workers who died as Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. A third worker was in stable condition at a hospital in Fairfax, the chief said.

Grant fled in a vehicle and detectives tracked his cellphone to the Harrisonburg area, Keen said. Grant later pulled over on I-81 in Augusta County and fatally shot himself during a standoff with Virginia State Police. A state police statement said troopers did not use force.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, Keen said.
