New energy vehicles (NEVs) on China's expressways consumed an average of 23 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a day during the Oct. 1-7 National Day holiday, up 51.42 percent year on year, official data showed Wednesday.

The National Energy Administration based its analysis on the 62,700 expressway charging facilities connected to its national monitoring platform. Over the week, NEVs completed 6.711 million charging sessions, consuming a total of 163 million kilowatt-hours.

The holiday has long been one of China's peak periods for travel, tourism and spending, and this year's charging figures -- logged as stations at highway service areas ran at full capacity -- point to green travel becoming a fixture of such breaks as the country's NEV fleet keeps growing.

The United Nations strongly condemned attacks on major Ukrainian cities, while expressing deep concern over mounting civilian casualties linked to intensified hostilities in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Wednesday.

Dujarric said the secretary-general was particularly alarmed by the reported record number of civilian casualties and extensive damage to critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

"The secretary-general strongly condemns the ongoing attacks on major Ukrainian cities by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, which are reportedly causing a record number of civilian casualties and resulting in major damage to critical civilian infrastructure. He is also deeply concerned by the rising number of civilian casualties as a result of increasing attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces in the Russian Federation, including recent attacks in the Moscow region. All attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, are a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately," he said.

Meanwhile, the UN said intensified attacks and frontline hostilities over the past 24 hours had caused more than 150 civilian casualties in Ukraine.

The attacks hit civilian infrastructure, including a hospital and energy infrastructure, disrupting electricity supplies nationwide and leaving parts of the country without power, he said.

Dujarric said UN agencies and their humanitarian partners were supporting emergency responders and local services by providing medical care, psychological assistance and emergency shelter.

"We, along with our humanitarian partners, are complementing the efforts of first responders and municipal services, provided medical care, psychological support and emergency shelter to people impacted by these attacks. During the first eight months of this year, we and our humanitarian partners, assisted 1.5 million people affected by strikes across Ukraine, as attacks continued to intensify and spread to areas further away from the front lines," said the spokesman.
