The renowned mathematician Maxim Kontsevich has lauded China's unique capacity for long-term planning and societal organization, contrasting it with what he views as a growing lack of such vision in the West.
Kontsevich, a Fields Medalist, has remained at the forefront of international mathematical exchange and maintained close ties with China's mathematics community through frequent visits to Chinese universities and research institutions. He shared his observations during an interview with China Media Group.
Reflecting on his experiences visiting China -- having made six trips in recent years -- the renowned mathematician noted the stark contrast between China and Western societies.
"It's very different from the West where I came from. And I have deep respect for Chinese culture," said Kontsevich.
When asked which aspects of Chinese culture interest him most, Kontsevich pointed to the country's institutional and societal efficacy.
"Actually, it's kind of very interesting how the society works and how it's really amazing how a society can organize something and make plans and make things work. So it's something which, I think, is missing now in the West here. So long-term projects became less and less possible in the West for various reasons," Kontsevich said.
