Positive Design Marks 36 Years in Asia's Luxury Retail Industry

Having just celebrated their 36th Founder's Day, the retail interior design and shopfitting company reflects on its regional expansion, long-standing partnerships and commitment to quality in a competitive luxury market.

SINGAPORE, Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Positive Design Pte. Ltd., a Singapore-founded retail interior design and shopfitting company, recently celebrated its 36th Founder's Day, marking more than three decades of growth. From modest local projects to serving international luxury brands across Asia, the company reflects on the regional expansion, long-standing relationships and commitment to quality that have shaped its journey.

From Singapore to a Regional Presence

Established in 1990 by Mr David Soh, Positive Design began when Singapore's retail interior and shopfitting industry was still developing. Its progression into luxury retail came gradually, as increasingly complex projects called for greater precision, craftsmanship and technical coordination.

Behind every completed luxury boutique are months of design development, engineering, fabrication, logistics and installation. For Positive Design, managing these interconnected processes has become central to its work with international brands.

A significant milestone in Positive Design's regional expansion was the growth of its Bangkok operation. What began as a small shared office with four to five employees developed into a team of more than 15 before the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting a move into its own office. Bangkok subsequently became an important base for supporting projects across the region.

Today, Positive Design maintains offices and manufacturing facilities across Thailand, China, Malaysia and Vietnam, extending its regional capabilities beyond its Singapore origins.

Staying Competitive Through Quality and Trust

Positive Design's regional growth has also brought challenges. The luxury retail slowdown in 2024 and 2025 resulted in delayed store openings, postponed refurbishments and tighter budgets. Rising material, labour and logistics costs further intensified competition from lower-cost manufacturers.

Rather than competing primarily on price, Positive Design maintained its focus on quality, technical expertise and reliable execution, and has maintained the trust of its clients.

Supporting this approach are relationships developed over decades. Many Positive Design employees and external partners have worked alongside the company for 10, 20 and even close to 30 years, fostering familiarity that enables efficient coordination and problem-solving.

Singapore Roots, Regional Expertise

Positive Design attributes much of its regional working approach to principles shaped by its Singapore roots, including planning, transparency, professionalism and accountability. These qualities are particularly important when coordinating international brand teams, contractors, factories and suppliers across different markets.

"When my father founded Positive Design in 1990, the focus was on doing good work and earning our clients' trust. Thirty-six years later, those values still guide us," Positive Design's General Manager, Marcus Soh, said. "What makes this milestone meaningful is not just how far we've grown beyond Singapore, but the people, partners and clients who have been part of that journey. As we look ahead, we hope to continue building on that trust for generations to come."

Looking ahead, Positive Design expects shorter project timelines, greater technological integration and rising sustainability expectations to reshape the luxury retail industry. As environmental responsibility becomes increasingly important across the industry, the company has taken steps to strengthen its sustainability practices through initiatives such as its EcoVadis assessment and partnership with CleanHub.

After 36 years, Positive Design aims to continue developing as a regional project partner, building on the expertise, relationships and trust established throughout its journey.
