China's top legislator Zhao Leji met with President of the Council of Ministers of Togo Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe in Beijing on Tuesday.
Zhao, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said that over the more than 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Togo, the two countries have always been sincere and friendly to each other, maintaining equality, mutual trust and win-win cooperation, and setting a model for solidarity and cooperation in the Global South.
President Xi Jinping met with Gnassingbe on Tuesday to jointly chart the course for the development of bilateral relations.
China is ready to work with Togo, guided by the important consensus of the two countries' leaders, to deepen political mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, said Zhao.
The NPC is willing to enhance exchanges and mutual learning with both houses of Togo's parliament, and strengthen coordination and cooperation within multilateral mechanisms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, said Zhao.
Gnassingbe said that Togo and China share a deep traditional friendship, and that bilateral relations are built on mutual trust, mutual respect, and shared principles.
He noted that China's concerns are also Togo's concerns. He expressed the hope to strengthen practical cooperation between the two countries, deepen dialogue and exchanges between their legislative bodies, and enhance multilateral coordination, so as to promote the continuous development of Togo-China relations and Africa-China relations.
On Tuesday afternoon, Gnassingbe laid a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes on Tian'anmen Square.
At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Gnassingbe is paying an official visit to China from October 9 to 16.
