Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Baku, Azerbaijan on Wednesday.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, congratulated the Russian side on the successful holding of its State Duma, and the smooth completion of an important domestic political agenda.

He said that President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held fruitful meetings in May and August this year, steering the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era toward sustained high-level development.

Noting that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province next month, Wang said it is believed that with the support of Russian and other parties, the APEC "China Year" will yield fruitful results, helping revitalize the historical process of the Asia-Pacific community and inject strong momentum into development and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The vast Eurasian continent is home to diverse civilizations, Wang said, adding that countries in the region are eager to maintain peace and stability and deepen multilateral cooperation.

With the Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) being held again after four years, China is willing to work closely with CICA member states, including Russia, practice true multilateralism and contribute to improving global governance, Wang said.

Lavrov said that under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, Russia and China have continued to advance bilateral relations and cooperation across various fields, achieving fruitful results that serve the fundamental interests of both countries.

Russia fully supports China in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, he said.

Noting Russia and China share similar positions on international affairs, Lavrov said that Russia is willing to further enhance coordination with China within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the Group of Twenty, APEC, and the BRICS mechanism to jointly uphold international fairness and justice.

The two sides also coordinated their respective positions on high-level exchanges between China and Russia, as well as on international and regional hotspot issues of mutual interest, and reached new consensus.

Wang Yi is in Baku to attend the Seventh Summit of the CICA on Thursday as special representative of President Xi Jinping.

Iran has equipped its military with more advanced weaponry and is fully prepared to respond to any potential aggression, according to Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman Hossein Mohebbi on Wednesday.

In an interview with a Tehran-based newspaper, the spokesman said that although initiating a new war against Iran would be irrational for the United States, the possibility remains, as the Trump administration needs an achievement to show before the midterm elections.

Iran is prepared to respond to any renewed aggression with greater force than before, and the consequences of such an action for the United States would be "more painful," said the spokesman.

Ali Azmaei, chief of the IRGC Navy, on Tuesday hit back at claims by the U.S. that the Strait of Hormuz is open and under Washington's control, saying Iran exercises "smart control" over the strait and requires vessels seeking to pass through the route to obtain authorization.
