China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Saturday concluded a joint maritime law enforcement patrol in the provisional measures zone designated under the China-ROK Fishery agreement, said the China Coast Guard (CCG).

The CCG vessel Changshan and the ROK fisheries guidance vessel Mugunghwa 42 took part in the patrol operation.

Lasting more than 210 hours and covering over 1,200 nautical miles, the ten-day patrol aimed to maintain fishing order in the patrolled water area. Personnel from both countries observed and recorded the activities of 123 fishing vessels, issued verbal reminders and guidance to 74, and boarded three for inspections. Fishing operations in the patrolled waters were generally in order, the CCG said.

The CCG said the joint patrol served as a practical measure to implement the bilateral fisheries agreement which has further deepened maritime law enforcement exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and jointly strengthened the management of fishing vessels operating in the provisional measures zone under the China-ROK Fishery Agreement, and played a positive role in combating illegal fishing, maintaining fishery production order, and conserving marine fishery resources.

"During the joint operation, we worked closely with ROK's Mugunghwa-42 fisheries guidance vessel in patrol, supervision, and publicity for fishing vessels from both countries. The operation effectively maintained production and operation order in the provisional measures zone and further deepened exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese and ROK maritime law enforcement agencies," said Yang Hailiang, a law enforcement officer aboard the Changshan.

The CCG said it will continue to take the joint patrol as an opportunity to further strengthen professional exchanges with the ROK maritime law enforcement agency, deepen practical cooperation, properly handle maritime emergencies, enhance mutual understanding, and jointly protect the fishery resources of the Yellow Sea.
