RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Sri Lanka trumped Harry Brook’s record double century Thursday with the second-highest successful run chase ever in one-day international cricket history to hand England a second successive defeat in the Pakistan tri-series.

Brook’s 116-ball 202 propelled England to 429 for four. Sri Lanka then counterpunched with a chase of 430 for eight for an extraordinary two-wicket win.

Needing six runs off Josh Tongue’s final two balls, Janith Liyanage lofted the fast bowler over long-off for a winning six to guide Sri Lanka to its most memorable ODI victory since winning the 1996 World Cup. Sri Lanka’s run-chase was second only to South Africa’s chase of 438-9 in a one-wicket win over Australia at Johannesburg in 2006.

“Incredible game of cricket, both teams were exceptional,” Brook said. “Sri Lanka just outplayed us. They played exceptional cricket to knock off 400.”

Brook was the first England batter to score 200 in the ODI format. He reached the milestone from 114 deliveries, breaking the previous mark of 116 set just last month by India's Shubman Gill. He was the first batter to score 200-plus in an innings and finishing on the losing team.

Avishka Fernando, who hit 97 from 83 balls, and Pavan Rathnayake set up the strong chase with a 166-run third-wicket stand after Sri Lanka lost two wickets inside the first five overs of the reply.

Dasun Shanaka, returning to the ODI fold after more than two years, then added another electrifying 133 runs with Rathnayake off just 79 balls.

Rathnayake completed his second ODI century, making 130 off 106 balls with 15 fours and three sixes to reduce the target to 107 off the 58 balls before holing out to long-on.

But Shanaka, who twice successfully overturned umpire decisions on TV reviews, kept going, smashing the England bowlers for eight sixes and six boundaries as he raced to 97 from 50 deliveries. Sam Curran took particular punishment, returning figures of 2-103.

England got back in contention in the 44th over when Shanaka's dismissal left Sri Lanka needing 67 from six overs.

Dunith Liyanage then smashed three sixes and seven fours in an unbeaten 61 off 27 balls as England's attack kept leaking boundaries.

With eight needed of the final over, Tongue bowled Wellalage (8) and Eshan Malinga (0) off successive balls but Asitha Fernando denied a hat trick and gave the strike back to Liyanage to finish off.

“We chased very well. I enjoyed it as captain,” Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis said. “Everyone believed we can do it.”

Brook set the record with a 114-ball 200 and holed out two balls later for 202 off the final ball of England’s innings.

He reached 100 off 75 balls with a ramped boundary over fine leg, and needed only 39 balls to add another 100 runs.

“It was a nice innings but being on the losing side it has no value whatsoever in my eyes,” Brook said. “We got to get back to the drawing board a little bit, and we have an opportunity in the next couple of games to nail down a place in the final.”

Joe Root (69), Will Jacks (66 not out) and Tom Banton (50) also contributed to England’s total.

The tournament moves to Lahore where England, which lost to Pakistan by 87 runs in the first match, takes on unbeaten Pakistan in the return game on Sunday.

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express saw its profits rise sharply in the third quarter as the credit card giant was able to transition the vast majority of its cardmembers over to the new higher-fee Platinum Card while its well-to-do customers continued to spend aggressively on their cards.

The New York-based company reported Friday a profit of $3.71 billion, up 28% from a year ago, or $5.42 a share. Excluding a one-time gain from AmEx's sale of its stake in Global Business Travel Group, the company earned a quarterly profit of $4.68 per share. That figure beat Wall Street estimates.

AmEx's revenue and profits rose from a combination of customers both charging more on their cards and spending more to have an AmEx card. Last year AmEx updated its Platinum Card, adding several new perks for cardmembers while raising the annual fee from $695 to $895. The reviews on the update were generally positive at the time. However, the biggest question for Wall Street was whether AmEx cardmembers, even with its wealthier customer base, would want to stomach a $200 price jump in the card.

So far, AmEx says that nearly all of the customers who have been moved onto the higher fee Platinum Card have decided to keep the card. Net card fees, which include the annual fees on cards like Platinum, rose by more than $400 million compared to a year earlier.

The company also continues to see upticks in the amount of money spent on the cards. The average AmEx customer spent $6,735 on their cards last quarter, or $2,245 a month. That's up 5% from last year.

Some of that higher spend is likely tied to inflation, said AmEx Chief Financial Officer Christophe Le Caillec in an interview. AmEx customers lean heavily into travel and entertainment spending, and for example, airline fares have risen sharply from a year ago due to higher fuel prices and other inflationary pressures. However, the company is also seeing the number of transactions per cardmember increasing as well.

The company now forecasts it will earn an adjusted profit of between $17.60 and $17.90 per share for the full year, raising the lower end of its forecast which previously was $17.30 to $17.90 per share.
