Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed strong dissatisfaction and serious concern over arbitrary and excessive law enforcement by British border officers against Chinese citizens, and vowed to safeguard their lawful rights and interests.
The Ministry's spokesman Guo Jiakun made the statement at a regular press briefing in Beijing when responding to a recent safety reminder issued by the Chinese Embassy in the UK for Chinese citizens regarding British entry and exit checks.
"Recently, the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in the UK have received multiple reports of Chinese citizens being detained and questioned for prolonged periods by British border enforcement officers, with their mobile phones and other electronic devices seized. China strongly deplores and is seriously concerned about the arbitrary and excessive law enforcement by British police. China has lodged solemn representations with the UK side and will do its utmost to safeguard the personal safety and lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens. We also remind Chinese citizens planning to travel to the UK to carefully read the notice issued by the Chinese Embassy in the UK to avoid inconvenience and losses," said Guo.
