Chinese outdoor equipment makers are transforming traditional camping gear into smart products, driving growth in exports and domestic sales of tents and other campsite items.

From electrically powered tent systems to smart lighting, ventilation and portable energy solutions, Chinese manufacturers are integrating intelligent technology as outdoor lifestyles gain popularity worldwide.

"We started in 2016 and have become a pioneer in this area both domestically and internationally. We have kept upgrading our technology since then," said Qiu Wei, general manager of Chinese outdoor equipment maker Pacbear Outdoor.

Smart technologies are reshaping China's supply chains for tents and other outdoor products, as diverse products are helping Chinese manufacturers reach a wider range of consumers worldwide and turn growing demand into new development opportunities.

In Changshu City in east China's Jiangsu Province, electric motors, control systems and lightweight materials are being incorporated into tents. In its neighboring city Changzhou, hotel-style tents cater to high-end camping resorts. Meanwhile, in Wuyi County, east China's Zhejiang Province, solar-powered awnings add a touch of smart technology to outdoor relaxation.

At the "world's supermarket" in east China's Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, where many international business owners flock to source their products, a Zimbabwean buyer arrived to view the tents on display.

"We came for the Canton Fair, but we came to Yiwu so that we can source products," said the buyer.

She expressed awe at the automatic functions of at tent in the market.

"I can't believe it. Wow, you guys are living in a different era altogether," the buyer said.

The global camping tent market is estimated to reach 8.8 billion U.S. dollars by 2035. For many industry insiders, a tent is no longer just a piece of fabric. It is becoming a combination of outdoor equipment, intelligent manufacturing and lifestyle.

At a store location of sports retailer Decathlon in Changshu, staff members said many new customers are quickly discovering a curiosity about outdoor lifestyles.

"Our company offers a rental service. Since many people may have never experienced outdoor activities or camping, they can search for our rental service on our platform," said Chen Haiyan, manager of the Outdoor Department at the store.
