China on Thursday called on the international community to further strengthen solidarity and cooperation, place equal emphasis on development and security, and ensure that emerging science and technologies better serve maritime security and people's well-being.

The call was made by Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, at a UN Security Council open debate on "Emerging Technologies and Maritime Security."

"At present, emerging science and technologies such as artificial intelligence, low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations and unmanned systems are developing rapidly, showing broad prospects for application in empowering ocean activities, developing the blue economy and safeguarding maritime security," said Fu.

"At the same time, the misuse and abuse of emerging science and technologies and the widening governance deficit have brought new risks and challenges to maritime security. The international community should strengthen unity and cooperation, give equal attention to both development and security, and ensure that emerging technologies better serve maritime security and the wellbeing of the people," he said.

On regional tensions, Fu said "In recent years, some regional conflicts have persisted and intensified, heightening tensions in adjacent waters and international shipping lanes, and impacting global maritime security and supply chain stability. All relevant parties should adhere to a common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable vision of security, actively pursue dialogue and consultation, resolve disputes through diplomatic channels, and work toward achieving lasting peace in the region at an early date."

"China supports the United Nations in playing a positive role in improving global governance in emerging technologies and maritime fields, and fully safeguarding the equal rights of developing countries to participate in the formulation of international rules," Fu said.

The Iranian navy said Thursday evening that an oil tanker was forced to halt operations after striking a mine and catching fire in a restricted zone east of the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident came hours after the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that three oil tankers that sought to cross the Strait of Hormuz through the "unauthorized" route south of the waterway exploded and caught fire after striking naval mines.

The IRGC navy said no vessel is allowed to pass through the restricted zone in the Strait of Hormuz without prior coordination or in the mistaken belief of U.S. claims. Uncoordinated navigation in dangerous waters has posed, and will continue to pose, a serious threat to vessels and crew, it added.
