A shooting erupted at Krakows Main Market Square in Poland on Saturday afternoon, leaving six people dead and 16 others injured and turning the bustling tourist hub into a scene of panic.
Speaking in Krakow on Saturday evening, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the shooting as a terrorist attack, saying Poland had never before experienced an act of terrorism of such severity, according to Polish news outlet Onet.
Parts of Krakow's Old Town remain under police lockdown as investigators continue their work, and the attack has stoked deep anxiety among local residents.
"I was in this area and I saw the ambulances and the police cars driving and somebody told us to run. But I had no idea why they told us this. So we just kept going and then eventually I ended up in the area where the guy was shot. And I took some pictures. So yeah, it was a very unfortunate turn of events," a resident recalled.
Polish police confirmed that one of those killed was a British national. Five of those wounded are foreign citizens from countries including Austria, Germany and Portugal. Horse-drawn carriage drivers working near the square at the time were also among the casualties. Horse-drawn carriage services at the Main Market Square have since been suspended, casting a pall over Krakow's tourism sector.
"Our city has suffered an unimaginable tragedy. Four members of our association were injured, two of them seriously. As far as I know, they are no longer in life-threatening condition, but they face a long recovery. We hope they recover soon," said Eryk Necek, a member of the Krakow Carriage Drivers' Association.
"We were actually in the area about an hour before, so luckily we missed it. We were up the north side of the square. And then it became pretty obvious something was going on. There were sirens everywhere and a lot of people. I think a lot of people didn't realize what was happening to start with. And then the mood changed in the city as people realized what was happening," said David, an Australian tourist.
