A laser communication ground system with a 500mm-caliber antenna was successfully deployed Sunday on the Pamir Plateau in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The system, developed by the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, marks the end of relying solely on microwave ground stations for satellite data reception.
Satellite-to-ground laser communications have abundant spectrum resources and a wider bandwidth, about ten times to nearly a thousand times wider than that of microwave communications.
Upon its completion, it will greatly enhance the country's capacity for massive satellite data transmission, providing a strong support to space missions such as the remote sensing.
