Shanghai, already known as a leading medical hub in Asia, is emerging as an ideal destination for healthcare globally, as the city's medical institutions are actively working to align with international standards.

The International Medical Service Standards released by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission in June officially took effect on Tuesday. This landmark document marks China's first foray into establishing clear guidelines for international medical services, outlining requirements for institutions, personnel, quality of care, service management, and payment models.

Lothar Siegfried, chief representative of a German company in Shanghai, chose to have a liver surgery at a top-class hospital in Shanghai because of its advanced medical technology and attentive services.

"I have a very good experience. The doctors are very good specialists. I totally trust what they tell me and I'm very satisfied with the surgery they have done so far," said Siegfried.

Gu Jingwen, director of the Worldwide Medical Center at Huashan Hospital and one of the drafters of the document, emphasized that what Shanghai offers to global patients goes beyond just top-tier medical care.

"International medical services refer to high-quality healthcare that meets global standards and characteristics. They're not simply specialized medical care, but an emerging service area that includes various aspects like healthcare, management, service, tourism, and insurance," said Gu.

Many top-tier hospitals in Shanghai employ medical staff fluent in English, French, German or other foreign languages to better serve overseas patients. Considering the dietary preferences of foreign patients, hospitals also offer a variety of Chinese and Western cuisine options for them.

Currently, many leading hospitals in Shanghai have set up agreements with over 30 domestic and international health insurance companies. Medical costs are settled directly between the hospital and the insurance provider, simplifying the payment process for patients and improving healthcare efficiency.

"Based on international experience, high-quality international medical services may satisfy diverse and personalized healthcare demands of patients at various levels, which is conducive to improving the operational environment and the global influence of Shanghai's healthcare sector," said Gu.

A montage showcasing traditional Chinese folk customs was aired during the 2026 Spring Festival Gala on Monday evening. The segment, titled "Horse Year Market", heralded the arrival of the Year of the Horse, which begins on Tuesday.

The sequence recreated the atmosphere of a holiday market commonly seen across China during the Spring Festival season.

Artisans shaped molten sugar into animal figures, a craft practiced for generations. Vendors prepared tanghulu -- skewered hawthorn berries coated in hardened syrup -- a popular festive snack.

Red paper-cuttings featuring horse motifs were displayed alongside lantern installations. Clay horse figurines were molded by hand, while families hung red lanterns to welcome the new year.

The segment ended with viewers from various countries extending greetings in Chinese and wishing audiences "good luck in the Year of the Horse," underscoring the gala's broad international viewership.

First broadcast in 1983, the annual Spring Festival Gala has become a hallmark of Chinese New Year celebrations in China. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's most-watched annual television program, it attracts more than 1billion viewers each year.
