Winter fishing season begins across China with bountiful harvests

Fishermen across China began to net their winter catches from Friday to Sunday, ushering in the harvest with hopes of bountiful catches as the winter fishing season kicks off.

The tradition coincides with the arrival of Major Snow falling on Dec 6 to 8 annually, the 21st of the 24 Solar Terms on the Chinese lunar calendar, indicating the start of the midwinter season.

In Baicheng County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, fishermen hauled in lively catches from a local fishpond, drawing buyers from other regions who arrived early to secure their supply.

"This year my family raised four major fish species, including grass carp, and the pond is now completely cleared. Over the past few days, many buyers have come to purchase fish," said Rukya Ailniyaz, a local fish farmer.

"I'm from Hotan. This truck can carry up to 8 tons of fish today," said Wei Hong, a fish buyer.

In Shaoxing City, east China's Zhejiang Province, the annual winter fishing event began in the Kangjia Lake.

More than 30 fishermen worked together to bring in a haul of about 25,000 kilograms of fish, including black carp, grass carp, silver carp.

"We raised the fish in an eco-friendly environment, ensuring their high quality. This year has been another year of abundant harvests," said Qin Bingshen, a local fisherman.

Also in the province, fish growers cast their first winter net in a rice-fish farming base in Yongjia County, Wenzhou City.

Among the haul were brightly colored field fish, weighing around 350 grams each. Known locally as Yongjia field fish or colorful carp, they live in rice paddies, feeding on insects and rice flowers.

"We sell the red ones for 100 yuan per kilogram and the multicolored ones for 136 yuan per kilogram. Customers usually call ahead to place orders, and our fish are sold nationwide," said Zhou Yuming, head of he breeding base.

The eco-friendly breeding approach, which integrates fish farming with natural ecosystems, not only maintains water quality but also minimizes the environmental impact of aquaculture.

Nicaragua's co-foreign minister Valdrack Jaentschke has warned that militarism must never be allowed to rise again, as Japan's recent moves to lift its arms export ban and revise the pacifist Constitution continue to draw international concern.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trials, where Japan's Class-A war criminals from World War II were brought to justice.

In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Valdrack Jaentschke voiced his concern that today's world order is being undermined by interventionism and other challenges.

"It is necessary for us to remember that after the end of World War II, countries worked hard to build a new international order based on international law. However, regrettably, more than 80 years later, we are seeing that this once explored and attempted order is being challenged by interventionism, a confrontational mindset, and tendencies like 'might makes right.' These are precisely the conditions that gave rise to fascism and militarism in the past, which ultimately led to the tragedy of World War II," he said.

He said the international community has a responsibility to pursue a new international order -- one fundamentally grounded in peace.

"Looking back at the history more than eight decades ago and comparing it with today's reality, it is our responsibility to recognize that the world should, and must, build a new international order that is more just, fairer, rooted in international law, based on a logic of mutual benefit and shared success, and fundamentally grounded in peace," said the minister.

"Today, as we revisit the Tokyo Trials, it is meant to remind the world that such a tragedy must never be repeated -- and that we must do everything in our power to prevent it from happening again. We must stop that dark world -- born from militarism, interventionism, and fascism -- from ever returning," he said.
