Senior members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Japan's ruling coalition, formed by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party, gathered in Beijing on Tuesday for the ninth meeting under an exchange mechanism, calling for enhanced exchanges between the ruling parties of the two countries.

Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, said China was willing to work with Japan to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, adhere to peaceful coexistence and promote the building of a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship that meets the requirements of the new era.

The ruling parties of the two countries should strengthen dialogue and communication and take concrete actions to promote the sound and steady development of China-Japan relations, Liu added.

"China and Japan are both important countries in Asia and the world, and China-Japan relations are of great significance beyond bilateral relations. When the ruling parties of China and Japan engage in political dialogue, we should discuss how to find the right way to get along with each other and contribute to global governance from such strategic and global perspectives. In particular, we should focus on steering course, cognition and action, seek peace and prosperity for the people of both countries, and inject more stability and positive energy into the region and the world," Liu said.

Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama of the Liberal Democratic Party and Secretary General Makoto Nishida of the Komeito Party said that the resumption of the meeting would play an important role in improving and developing bilateral relations.

They said they were willing to keep closer inter-party exchanges with China, enhance the friendship of the people, and deepen practical cooperation in various fields.

"The exchange mechanism between the ruling parties of Japan and China has restarted. I'm confident that this meeting will open a new chapter in inter-party exchanges between Japan and China. To push forward Japan-China relations constructively and steadily, mutual understanding and support between the people of the two countries are indispensable," he said.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that Seoul firmly adheres to the one-China principle, in comments made ahead of his upcoming state visit to China.

The remarks were made in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). The visit is scheduled for Jan 4–7.

"The consensus reached between governments of the Republic of Korea and China when diplomatic relations were established continues to be the fundamental principle governing our relations, and its effectiveness remains steadfast. I want to clearly state that the ROK has always adhered to the one-China principle. Maintaining peace and stability in regional matters, including in Northeast Asia and concerning the Taiwan issue, holds significant importance to us," said Lee.

"The foundational relationship between the ROK and China was established on a very principled and fundamental basis from the beginning. It is clear that the ROK government has always adhered to this position and has never wavered from it. I believe that the sound development of ROK-China relations depends on both sides fully respecting each other's core interests and being mutually tolerant of each other's positions. In this context, we will, as always, uphold the one-China principle as the Taiwan issue is China's most fundamental concern," he said.
