U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal for his country to "take over" Gaza has ignited widespread anger among Palestinian residents in the war-torn enclave, who have vowed to remain in their homeland despite the threat of forced displacement.
In a joint press conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump announced a shocking plan saying that the United States will take ownership of the Gaza Strip and redevelop it after Palestinians are relocated elsewhere. "We're going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it'll be something that the entire Middle East can be very proud of," said the president.
Trump's rhetoric quickly drew international condemnation, especially from Palestinian communities, who called it "unacceptable".
"Trump's remarks are essentially using the excuse of rebuilding to expel Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt. This is absolutely unacceptable because the intentions behind his words are malicious. Whether it's the Palestinian people, the Palestinian government, or any Palestinian political faction, none of us can accept such statements," said Mohammed Abu Taha, a resident in Rafah City of southern Gaza.
Another local resident, Mohammed Astale, condemned the American plan as a flagrant violation of international law.
"The international community will never agree to Trump's plan, as the vast majority of countries adhere to international law, which governs relations between states. Moreover, international humanitarian law is clear: if the United States were to take such action in the Gaza Strip, even if it's only one aspect of the plan he mentioned, it would constitute a blatant violation of both international law and international humanitarian law, just as Israel's previous war in Gaza have done," he said.
Palestinians have voiced firm opposition to any forced displacement, reiterating their determination to stay in their homeland.
"We are deeply shocked by Trump's remarks. He is attempting to intimidate and threaten the Palestinian people with coercion and forced displacement. As Palestinians, we will not leave this land. What they failed to achieve through war, they will not accomplish through political means either," said resident Mohammed Mansour.
Nabil Mahmoud, also from Rafah, shot a defiant message to Trump. "We want to make it clear to Trump and to global leaders: the Palestinian people are rooted in their land. We are as firm as the roots of olive trees. We will never give up our land in Gaza, nor will we abandon our land in the West Bank," he stressed.
