China has built a thriving ecological and environmental protection industry as the country pushes ahead on the road of green development, said a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, on Tuesday.

Speaking at a media interview prior to the opening of the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing, Huang Miansong, a CPPCC National Committee member, briefed the reporters on the achievements made in the country's ecological and environmental protection in recent years.

"In recent years, with the continuous and in-depth advancement of ecological conservation efforts, the environment has undergone fundamental improvements, and the ecological and environmental protection industry has also realized rapid development. The principle that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets has been firmly rooted in people's hearts. As of the end of last year, the number of people engaged in China's ecological and environmental protection industry had exceeded 3.4 million, while the operating revenue had surpassed 2 trillion yuan (about 274.5 billion U.S. dollars), nearly quintupling the figure a decade ago, making it an important driver of green productivity," said Huang, who is also the general manager of the smart environmental protection department at the Capital Eco-Pro Group, a company engaging in environmental services, including water treatment and recycling.

"With continuous increase in investment in ecological governance has come significant improvement in ecological environment quality. The ecological and environmental protection industry is booming and has already become an important productive force now. It also provides important support for building a beautiful China. As a result, we now have a thriving environmental protection industry and people breathing fresh air, earning good incomes and having hope for the future," said Huang.

The initiative of "Beautiful China" was proposed during the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, which highlighted the need to place ecological progress in a prominent position, and integrating it into all aspects and the entire process of economic, political, cultural, and social development.

The week-long third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee got underway on Tuesday afternoon, gathering around 2,100 members from a wide range of sectors, such as literature and arts, science and technology, the social sciences, and economics.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned on Sunday that Tehran would view the United States and Israel's military bases and facilities in the Middle East as "legitimate targets" should Washington take military action against Iran.

At a parliamentary session convened to review an emergency proposal on assembly regulations, Qalibaf emphasized that, at this highly sensitive juncture, Iran must accurately and thoroughly identify the schemes of its adversaries.

Qalibaf said that Iran is currently confronting Israel and the United States simultaneously on four fronts: economic, cognitive, military, and counterterrorism. Of them, the economic warfare and the cognitive and psychological warfare began many years ago and have persisted to this day, growing increasingly complex and intense in recent years.

The remarks came as U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly "seriously considering authorizing a strike" against Iran, taking advantage of its nationwide unrest.

Protests have erupted in several Iranian cities since late December over the sharp fall of the rial and long-standing economic hardship. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and voiced willingness to address economic grievances, while warning against violence and vandalism.

Amid the ongoing protests, deadly clashes have been reported lately between police and what the government described as "rioters." However, no official death toll has been released.

Also on Sunday, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will address the country's economic situation and political environment in a televised interview later that day.
