Thousands in Gaza face water crisis amid Israeli electricity cuts

More than 600,000 Gaza residents are facing a clean water crisis after Israel's Sunday decision to cut electricity to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

The move, aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages still held in Gaza, has halted power supply to water plants in the region.

According to Israeli figures, 59 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with around 24 believed to be alive.

Hamas has condemned the decision, labeling it a "starvation policy." The ongoing power and water cuts have worsened the already dire living conditions in the Gaza Strip, where residents are struggling to endure the harsh winter.

Since the outbreak of the Palestine-Israel conflict in Gaza in October 2023, the territory has been plunged into a complete blackout.

In one of the most densely populated Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, families are relying on wood stoves for light and warmth during the cold winter months.

"We demand to be provided with electricity. Israel is punishing the civilian citizens here. Providing us with electricity is our right as civilians, in addition to lifting all other restrictions, it's not our mistake," said Fayez Zanoun, a Palestinian refugee.

"The electricity and water cuts that are being imposed on us are in line with the displacement project that Trump wants to force. But despite the electricity and water cuts and the pressures, we will remain steadfast here, no matter what difficulties life throws at us, we stand strong," said Mohammad Al-Tawil, another Palestinian refugee.

"We are suffering greatly. We do not have light bulbs or any light source, we are forced to use candles now, but it may cause fires and burn us. We do not even have solar panels. Our suffering has been ongoing for a year and a half," said Rabhi Abu Odeh, a Palestinian refugee.

China on Tuesday sent the Yaogan-50 01 remote sensing satellite into space.

Launched at 22:16 (Beijing Time) aboard a modified version of the Long March-6 rocket, the satellite has entered planned orbit, according to the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.

It will be used for national land surveys, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and mitigation.

The launch was the 624th flight mission undertaken by the Long March rocket series and marked China's first successful orbital launch of 2026.
