The Sudanese government announced Monday that it has agreed to build UN logistical supply bases in North Darfur State in western Sudan.

"The Government of Sudan has agreed on the United Nations' request to establish logistical supply bases around El Fasher to facilitate humanitarian work in Mellit and Tawila areas," Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council said in a statement.

The statement added that its chairman, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, also commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), received a phone call on Monday from UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher. During the call, the two discussed the possibility of delivering aid to El Fasher while avoiding obstacles posed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) or other groups.

Fletcher said he also spoke with Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the RSF, who agreed to grant the UN access to deliver aid.

The UN has already begun mobilizing efforts to support and assist Sudanese civilians, the coordinator said.

Armed conflict in western Sudan has continued to escalate in recent days, with more than 400 civilians killed in El Fasher and other areas of North Darfur State since April 11. Over the past two weeks, around 700,000 people in El Fasher have been displaced.

Since May 10, 2024, fierce fighting has erupted between the SAF and the RSF in El Fasher, part of the broader conflict that has engulfed Sudan since mid-April 2023.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced over 15 million, and left Sudan facing what the UN calls one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that Seoul firmly adheres to the one-China principle, in comments made ahead of his upcoming state visit to China.

The remarks were made in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). The visit is scheduled for Jan 4–7.

"The consensus reached between governments of the Republic of Korea and China when diplomatic relations were established continues to be the fundamental principle governing our relations, and its effectiveness remains steadfast. I want to clearly state that the ROK has always adhered to the one-China principle. Maintaining peace and stability in regional matters, including in Northeast Asia and concerning the Taiwan issue, holds significant importance to us," said Lee.

"The foundational relationship between the ROK and China was established on a very principled and fundamental basis from the beginning. It is clear that the ROK government has always adhered to this position and has never wavered from it. I believe that the sound development of ROK-China relations depends on both sides fully respecting each other's core interests and being mutually tolerant of each other's positions. In this context, we will, as always, uphold the one-China principle as the Taiwan issue is China's most fundamental concern," he said.
