A total of 75 peacekeepers of the first batch of Chinese peacekeeping rapid response unit to Abyei, arrived at Beijing on Friday after successfully completing their 12-month-long peacekeeping mission.
The rapid response unit mainly consists of troops from a brigade under the Chinese PLA 82nd Group Army and was deployed to Abyei, a territory contested by Sudan and South Sudan, in May last year.
During its deployment there, the rapid response unit completed over 300 operations, including armed escorts and patrols and protection of key points. The unit received a commendation from the Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and all its members were awarded the United Nations Peace Medal.
"During the mission, we actively fulfilled our authorized duties. All peacekeeping officers and soldiers worked together with one heart, braved all difficulties and accomplished every peacekeeping task to a high standard. We contributed to regional peace and stability and the maintenance of world peace, and demonstrated the fine image of the Chinese peacekeeping force," said Zhu Tao, an officer of the unit.
According to the plan, the second group of its members will set off for home in mid-May after completing all the rotation and handover work.
