The ASEAN-China-GCC Summit represents a major innovation in regional economic cooperation, holding great importance for peace and prosperity of both the region and the entire world, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday, in commenting on the outcome of the just-concluded ASEAN-China-GCC Summit.

In a historic move, China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries convened a landmark trilateral summit in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on Tuesday. Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the inaugural summit and delivered an important speech.

"Yesterday afternoon, Premier Li Qiang attended the ASEAN-China-GCC Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme of the summit was 'Synergizing Economic Opportunities towards Shared Prosperity'. In his speech, Premier Li emphasized the long-standing friendship and exchanges between China, ASEAN, and the GCC countries. Against the backdrop of a changing and turbulent international landscape and sluggish global economic growth, he said that establishing an exchange platform and cooperation mechanism like the trilateral summit deserves to be called a major innovation in regional economic cooperation. Through closer connectivity and cooperation, the three sides can create a vibrant economic zone and growth hub, which holds profound significance to the prosperity of each side's economy and peaceful development of Asia and the entire world," said Mao Ning, the spokeswoman, at a press conference in Beijing.

"The three sides should firmly seize this historic opportunity, enrich the content of cooperation, and strive to create a model of interregional openness, cooperation across different stages of development, and cross-civilization integration. China is willing to strengthen the trilateral partnership with ASEAN and the GCC, formulate an action plan for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation through negotiation, enhance connectivity, expand cooperation in various fields, and promote people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding," Mao said.

"The three sides should strengthen communication and coordination within multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, defend the common interests of developing countries, and unequivocally oppose hegemonism and power politics, to promote global governance towards a more just and reasonable direction," said the spokeswoman.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned on Sunday that Tehran would view the United States and Israel's military bases and facilities in the Middle East as "legitimate targets" should Washington take military action against Iran.

At a parliamentary session convened to review an emergency proposal on assembly regulations, Qalibaf emphasized that, at this highly sensitive juncture, Iran must accurately and thoroughly identify the schemes of its adversaries.

Qalibaf said that Iran is currently confronting Israel and the United States simultaneously on four fronts: economic, cognitive, military, and counterterrorism. Of them, the economic warfare and the cognitive and psychological warfare began many years ago and have persisted to this day, growing increasingly complex and intense in recent years.

The remarks came as U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly "seriously considering authorizing a strike" against Iran, taking advantage of its nationwide unrest.

Protests have erupted in several Iranian cities since late December over the sharp fall of the rial and long-standing economic hardship. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and voiced willingness to address economic grievances, while warning against violence and vandalism.

Amid the ongoing protests, deadly clashes have been reported lately between police and what the government described as "rioters." However, no official death toll has been released.

Also on Sunday, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will address the country's economic situation and political environment in a televised interview later that day.
