China's longest and largest gas pipeline, known as the West-to-East Gas Pipeline, has sent more than 550 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the Yangtze River Delta region, according to the China Oil and Gas Piping Network Corporation (PipeChina), operator of the project.

The West-to-East Gas Pipeline is a project that transmits natural gas from China's resource-rich western region to its manufacturing powerhouses in the east.

In Nantong City of east China's Jiangsu Province, the second phase of the high-pressure pipeline project at Nantong Station was recently put into operation. Ahead of the summer's peak natural gas demand, the pipeline has successfully begun to supply gas to Nantong's Rudong county, home to robust green energy and seafood industries, with an annual transmission capacity reaching 73 million cubic meters.

Altogether, the West-to-East Gas Pipeline consists of three lines, which all begin in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and carry gas to different regions of the country. In Jiangsu's Suzhou city, Pipelines I and II interconnect, allowing gas originating in Xinjiang's Tarim Basin, as well as from Central Asia, to flow directly on to Shanghai at a rate exceeding two million cubic meters per hour.

"As of now, the west-to-east gas pipeline has supplied a total of 550 billion cubic meters of gas to the Yangtze River Delta region, serving 204 direct users, marking a growth of approximately 16 percent compared to the same period last year. The peak daily gas transmission volume is close to 200 million cubic meters. The gas supply accounts for about three quarters of the total natural gas consumption in the Yangtze River Delta region, benefiting over 200 million people," said Si Gangqiang, a representative for PipeChina's West-to-East Transmission Company.

According to latest data, the primary natural gas transport capacity of the project's pipeline network has reached 394 billion cubic meters, marking a significant leap in its gas transmission capacity.

"Pipe China continues to strengthen the long-term mechanism for ensuring stable natural gas supply and accelerate the implementation of the interconnectivity of storage and transportation facilities. Over the past five years, there has been a 76 percent increase in the primary natural gas transport capacity and a 74 percent growth in interconnected cross-regional supply capacity," said Zhu Huafeng, deputy general manager at PipeChina Engineering Technology Innovation.

The death toll from a shopping mall fire in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi climbed to 60 after at least 30 bodies were recovered from a shop of the multi-story building, officials said on Wednesday.

The bodies were recovered from the mezzanine floor of the shopping mall, said senior police official Syed Asad Raza, adding that several people are still missing and a search operation is continuing to recover them.

He said that the rescue efforts are being carried out using sophisticated machines, and debris is being removed from the collapsed sections of the building.

The official said that the rescue workers are facing difficulties reaching some parts of the building due to smoke and heat inside the damaged structure, adding that one part of the building is cleared and the other two parts are being combed to rescue people under the rubble.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi said that an investigation into the incident has been launched as authorities look into the fire from multiple angles.
