China urges US to resolve trade concerns through equal dialogue

A Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson on Thursday urged the United States to resolve trade-related concerns through equal dialogue and jointly maintain the stability of the global industrial and supply chains.

U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to double tariffs on imported steel, aluminum and their derivatives to 50 percent starting Wednesday, according to a White House statement issued Tuesday.

At a regular press briefing in Beijing, He Yongqian, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, noted that the latest U.S. tariff hike is an act of unilateralism and protectionism.

"China has repeatedly emphasized that the tariff measures based on the Section 242 investigation are a typical act of unilateralism and protectionism, long ruled by the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement mechanism as violating WTO rules. The U.S.'s latest increase in tariffs on steel, aluminum, and their derivatives not only benefits no one, fails to safeguard industrial security, but also severely disrupts the stability of global industrial and supply chains. This U.S. approach has already faced opposition from many countries. China urges the U.S. to respect economic principles, abandon zero-sum mindset, cease overgeneralizing and abusing the concept of national security, and work with all parties to uphold the rules-based multilateral trading system, resolve respective concerns through dialogue on equal footing, and jointly maintain the stability of global industrial and supply chains," she said.

Voting in Chile's presidential runoff election opened on Sunday, with leftist candidate Jeannette Jara facing Republican contender Jose Antonio Kast.

According to Chile's Electoral Service, voting began at 08:00 local time (1100 GMT) and will end at 18:00 (2100 GMT) the same day, with more than 15 million registered voters eligible to cast ballots.

In this round of voting, the candidate who receives the most votes will win the election. The president-elect will take office on March 11 next year.

No candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round on Nov. 16, meaning Jara and Kast, who won 26.85 percent and 23.92 percent, respectively, advanced to the runoff.

The two candidates have focused on improving social security, tackling illegal immigration and other issues in a bid to win over voters.
