Books and journals on China's scientific and technological development have attracted attention at the 31st Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), with over 1,700 exhibitors from 80 countries and regions.

The Encyclopedia of China Publishing House (ECPH) exhibited the volumes "Mining and Metallurgical Engineering" and "Psychology" of the Chinese Encyclopedia (Third Edition) at the fair.

Liu Hang, general manager of the ECPH, said the two volumes in English provided a comprehensive overview of fundamental knowledge and the latest research in mining and psychology in China.

"The English versions of these two volumes of the Chinese Encyclopedia represent China's highest level of publishing in these two subjects," Liu said.

He said the download volume of the two versions has already reached 400,000 respectively, demonstrating the recognition from international researchers.

The Science China journal series, National Science Review, and many other Chinese scientific journals are also on display at the book fair.

Niels Peter Thomas, President of the Greater China business of Springer Nature, said the scientific publications are a window to showcase China's scientific research achievement.

"We see big trends in technology. Many Chinese researchers are very much applying already their technology. We see new trends in how content is created. We see new revolutionary ideas, for example, from AI and other digitalization effects, in the publishing industry and a lot of these trends also come from China," he said.

Starting on Wednesday, the five-day book fair displays around 220,000 books from China and other parts of the world. More than 20 countries, including France, Germany and Japan, have set up national exhibition booths at the book fair.

Major international publishing houses including Springer Nature, Penguin Random House, and Wiley have participated in the fair, showcasing a curated and extensive selection of foreign-language books.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned on Sunday that Tehran would view the United States and Israel's military bases and facilities in the Middle East as "legitimate targets" should Washington take military action against Iran.

At a parliamentary session convened to review an emergency proposal on assembly regulations, Qalibaf emphasized that, at this highly sensitive juncture, Iran must accurately and thoroughly identify the schemes of its adversaries.

Qalibaf said that Iran is currently confronting Israel and the United States simultaneously on four fronts: economic, cognitive, military, and counterterrorism. Of them, the economic warfare and the cognitive and psychological warfare began many years ago and have persisted to this day, growing increasingly complex and intense in recent years.

The remarks came as U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly "seriously considering authorizing a strike" against Iran, taking advantage of its nationwide unrest.

Protests have erupted in several Iranian cities since late December over the sharp fall of the rial and long-standing economic hardship. Iranian authorities have acknowledged the demonstrations and voiced willingness to address economic grievances, while warning against violence and vandalism.

Amid the ongoing protests, deadly clashes have been reported lately between police and what the government described as "rioters." However, no official death toll has been released.

Also on Sunday, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will address the country's economic situation and political environment in a televised interview later that day.
