Mud, debris cleanup underway after heavy rains hit multiple regions in China

Following days of sustained heavy rainfall, multiple regions across China - including Liaoning's Dalian, Heilongjiang, Hubei's Xianfeng, and Guangxi's Longlin County - are now entering a crucial phase of post-flood recovery, with local governments and volunteers intensively carrying out mud and debris clear-up operations to restore normalcy and ensure public safety.

In Dalian City, northeast China's Liaoning Province, heavy rain that intensified overnight on Tuesday led to waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, particularly in the Jinpu New Area. Municipal crews worked through the night to drain underpasses and roads. By early Wednesday morning, the rainfall had eased, and major thoroughfares were largely cleared of water.

However, with more rain expected later in the evening, clear-up teams remain on high alert.

In northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, heavy rains swept through multiple areas starting Monday. The heaviest accumulation, 207.6 mm, was recorded in Linkou County, Mudanjiang City.

In Qingchuan Township, Yanshou County, rapid river flooding breached embankments, inundating a gas station and nearby homes.

Although water flows have since receded, cleanup continues as meteorological forecasts warn of further severe convective weather including gale-force winds and possible tornadoes in the coming days.

Xianfeng County in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in central China's Hubei Province was hit particularly hard.

In Gaoleshan Town, floodwaters submerged parts of the Second Ethnic Experimental Primary School, with water levels reaching up to 1.5 meters - enough to flood first-floor classrooms.

After the water began to subside, hundreds of people - including teachers, fire personnel, parents, and volunteers - mobilized for an overnight mud removal and disinfection effort.

As of Wednesday, indoor clear-up had largely been completed, with outdoor efforts still going on. Public transportation has partially resumed, and over 18,000 evacuees have returned home.

Further south, Longlin County, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region also saw widespread flooding between Monday and Tuesday.

As floodwaters receded, road maintenance teams deployed heavy machinery to remove landslide debris and restore damaged infrastructure. Local officials and civilians formed joint volunteer teams to clear the mud and silt, and unclog the clogged sewer.
