There are no winners in trade wars or tariff wars and protectionism will only harm the interests of all parties, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

She made the statement in response to letters issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to key trading partners, threatening them with high tariffs.

"On tariff issues, China's position has been consistent and clear. There are no winners in a tariff war or trade war, and protectionism harms the interests of all parties," said Mao.

The U.S. share of global GDP under President Donald Trump has fallen to its lowest level since 1980, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Saturday.

RIA Novosti said data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund show that U.S. purchasing power parity sank to 14.65 percent last year.

That's compared to an average of 14.93 percent during former President Joe Biden's four years in office.
