China has launched a fresh consumption promotion campaign known as "Shopping in China" in continued efforts to attract global visitors and boost consumption during the ongoing summer vacation season, a Ministry of Commerce spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The campaign coincides with a seasonal surge in tourism, according to He Yongqian, the spokeswoman.

"With the arrival of the summer vacation season, domestic travel is on the rise, and inbound tourism is entering its peak season. The Ministry of Commerce, in coordination with other competent authorities, has kept launching and organizing the 'Shopping in China' serial activities. Efforts are made to guide all regions to adopt multiple measures to expand the supply of high-quality goods and services and innovate and optimize in-depth integration of business, tourism, culture, sports and health in light of the characteristics of summer consumption and local features, promoting sustained growth in summer consumption," said the spokeswoman.

"For example, the 'Shanghai Summer' international consumption season was launched last Friday, featuring the organization of over 300 events centered around 'fun, enjoyment, and shopping'. The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region [in south China] will introduce more than 2,000 cultural, tourism, dining, and sports consumption activities under the theme of 'spending a trendy summer vacation, having fun in Guangxi'. Fujian Province [in east China] has initiated the 'happy shopping around Fujian' summer consumption season to showcase the rich characteristics of Minnan (southern Fujian Province) culture to attract global visitors. With in-depth implementation of consumption promotion activities, and with the various consumption expansion policies and measures continuing to take effect, we believe that the vitality of summer spending will be further unleashed," she said.

The Bayannur section of the Yellow River in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region became fully frozen as of 07:00 Sunday, officially entering its stable winter ice period.

Freezing of the river commenced on December 4, 2025, but repeated thawing and refreezing driven by temperature fluctuations and higher water flow postponed a full, stable freeze-over. The entire process lasted 48 days, 29 days longer than the previous year, making it the longest freezing period for this section in recent years.

In response to the extended and volatile freezing process, local authorities in Bayannur City and districts along the river have intensified their ice-jam prevention efforts. Officials have been conducting thorough inspections to identify and manage any potential obstacles within the river channel that could contribute to dangerous ice dams.

To ensure safety and stability during the frozen season, a 24-hour monitoring and patrol system has been implemented along the riverbanks to watch for any signs of ice-related hazards.
